Search for books or DVDs

Keep it simple!
Check your spelling! The catalog won't correct typos.
Write down call numbers and locations to find the book on the shelf.
Use quotation marks to search for phrases
"social psychology"
Use AND to narrow searches: records must contain both terms
personality AND development
Use OR to broaden searches: records can contain either term
children OR adolescents
Use NOT to clarify searches: records cannot contain the term after NOT
addiction NOT alcoholism
Search with root words using the symbol $
intell$ finds "intelligent," "intellect," etc.
Use ? to indicate an unknown letter
wom?n finds "woman" and "women"

Note: To search with a root term as described in the box above, the symbol in this database is *, as in psych* – this will find "psychological," "psychiatric," "psyche," etc.

To find books with a known title:
type the main title in the search box, select "title", and search
To find books about a topic:
type a simple keyword in the search box, select "subject", and search
To find any books that discuss a topic:
type your keywords, select "words or phrase", and search
To find and request books from other NC community colleges for free:
go to the catalog page, enter your search term/s, select "ALL" from the library menu, and search – remember to allow at least 1 week for books to arrive from other libraries!
