Black History Month (also called African American History Month), observed annually in February throughout the United States, strives to highlight the lives and contributions of African Americans. Originally conceived as "Negro History Week" in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson, Black History Month has been recognized by presidential proclamation every year since 1976, including President Obama's Black History Month proclamation in 2015.
